Conversing with your teenager

Discussing drugs with teenagers isn’t easy.
Here are some basic tips and ideas.
For more information, see Getting on their Wavelength

  • Talk to them when you're calm
  • Put yourself in their shoes - remember how it felt when you were a teenager
  • Bring drugs issues into normal conversation
  • Be honest about your own use of drugs or alcohol
  • Help them feel you really care about their welfare, rather than your own worries
  • Don’t wait for a crisis - get into the habit of discussing important things with them
  • Listen to their replies – even if you don’t agree. They’ll respect you for listening
  • Stick by them – show them you want to keep on trying to talk
  • Look after yourself - you’ll tackle problems better if you feel OK
